Ida Joanna Rippey was born July 31st,1853 in Moultrie Co, IL, a daughter of John Rippey and Martha Elizabeth Harley. Her parents settled in Moultrie Co, IL late in 1852, later living for a time in Champaign Co, IL. Joanna married 27 April 1869 in Moultrie County to Charles D. Woodard and had children Grant Samuel Woodard born December 1869, Flora E. Woodard born January 1873, and John H. Woodard born October 1874. The family lived in Jonathan Creek Twp in Moultrie County when the 1880 Census was taken. Another child, Anna C. Woodard born in 1884 was found living as a servant in 1900 in Moultrie Co, IL.
By 1890, Joanna's husband Charles Woodard must have died (or they divorced) as she married 7 January 1890 to Noah Fletcher Patterson. She and her 2nd husband had a son Jack Allie Patterson born 16 March 1890 and a daughter Mamie Marie born April 1894. Her husband Noah (called "Fletch") had a bad reputation, spent alot of time at the local saloons and was often in trouble with the law. In August of 1901, he murdered his friend Jack Thomason and was sent to the State Penitentiary in Chester, Randolph County, IL where he was found listed as a prisoner in the 1910 Census. I have been unable to locate Joanna or Fletch in 1920 Census, but he was listed as a widower in the 1930 Census back in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, Illinois. A news article from the Decatur Herald states:
