Mr. David Eugene "Gene" Pamplin, 65, of Monticello, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at UAMS in Little Rock. A native of Portland and 1955 graduate from Portland High School, he received a B.S.E. from the University of Arkansas of Monticello. He then earned a master's degree in administration from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville and later completed the course work for a doctorate from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. He was a long time educator, having taught at Monticello High School, Benton, University of Arkansas at Monticello, Wilmot, McGehee, Rogers, Ross-Van Ness, Eudora, Delta, Lake Village and Clarendon. He loved mathematics and enjoyed coaching and refereeing. Upon retirement he worked as an independent crop adjuster. Gene was also civic minded. While working with John-Deere Tractor Company in Chillocothe, Missouri, he served as a city councilman. He was the past president of the Optimist Club during which time he worked to support many activities for young people. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer. He was preceded in death by his father, Millard Pamplin in 1998.He is survived by his wife Nancy Herring Pamplin, two sons, David Pamplin and wife Kristy, all of Monticello and Graham Pamplin and wife Melinda of Star City; his mother, Mildred Tumlison Pamplin of Portland, three grandchildren, Leslie, Cole and Tyler Pamplin and two step-grandchildren, Christopher and Justin Powell.
