Actor, Director. He began his acting career with Kalem Studios, New York, in 1907 and directed the first of his eighty-seven films in 1911. He received his first major screen credit for "The Barefoot Boy" (1914). Noted for Drama and Romance films, his best acting roll was as Judas in "From Manager to the Cross" (1912). As a director, he is best remembered for the epic "When Knighthood Was in Flower" (1922) and "The Scarlet Letter" (1934), which was nominated for an Oscar.
