He received his first major screen credit for "The Barefoot Boy" (1914). Noted for Drama and Romance films, his best acting roll was as Judas in "From Manager to the Cross" (1912). As a director, he is best remembered for the epic "When Knighthood Was in Flower" (1922) and "The Scarlet Letter" (1934), which was nominated for an Oscar.
