Jean was born November 30, 1923 in Daytona, Florida, to Susan (Thusa) Tarbell Hamlin and C.E. Hamlin. She attended the Western Michigan Laboratory School in Kalamazoo and graduated from Western Michigan with a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology in 1944. Jean and John R. lived in St. Simons Island, GA, while he was attending Naval Training. The Cochrans later moved to New York where Jean supported the family while John R. earned his Doctorate from Columbia University. Jean and John R. eventually returned to Kalamazoo where he became Superintendent of Schools. After John R.'s death in 1981, Jean was an active member of the Black River Country Club, an avid bridge player, a member of a bowling league and never missed her daily crossword. She continued her support of the Port Huron area and dabbled in the stock market.
