Dr. Sam Tally Simpson M.D.
96, passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2015. Born in Stevenson, Alabama, June 19, 1919. Son of the late Hayden Hicks Simpson and Mary Belle Tally Simpson. He graduated from Tennessee Military Institute and attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received a Bachelor of Arts & Science degree from the University of Alabama in Pre-Med and Philosophy, Basic Medical Sciences at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social Fraternity and Phi Sigma Scholastic Fraternity. Received his medical degree from Long Island College of Medicine. His internship and residency was at St. Louis Missionary Baptist. Dr. Simpson obtained his pilot's license at age 16. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked in Army medical corps at U.S. Veteran's Hospital, Columbia, S.C. He was discharged in 1946 with rank of Captain. He practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology in Birmingham for a number of years. He earned a Master Degree of Public Health from Tulane in New Orleans. He received the Deans Academic Award at Tulane School of Public Health. He came to Manatee County in 1971 and served as the health director. He later served as health director of medical service for Dade County. He was a Fellow of American Board of Abdominal Surgery, American Medical Society, and Manatee County Medical Society. He served on numerous boards concerning health in Manatee County. Dr. Simpson retired from public health in 1982. He is survived by his wife, Donna Courtney Simpson, son Henry (Debbie) of Lawrenceville, GA. daughter Leigh (Jonathan) of Pinckard, Alabama, three grandsons Zach, Michael, and Matthew, and a devoted step son; John Courtney. He is predeceased by a brother, Dr. William Simpson, Gadsen, AL. He was a member of the Palmetto First Baptist Church, Bradenton Yacht Club and American Legion Post 39. The Burial will be in Stevenson, Alabama at a later date.
