"Death of a Prominent Citizen --
Dr. Robert W. Elmer, eldest son of Jonathan Elmer, Sr., deceased at his residence on East Commerce Street, Monday afternoon. Dr. Elmer was born in 1836. He was educated at the West Jersey Collegiate School, Mount Holly, the West Jersey Academy, of this city, and at Princeton College. April 5th, 1860, he graduated from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania. During the war he was a Surgeon in the 23rd New Jersey Volunteers, serving with the Regiment until it was mustered out. Returning from the war he commenced the practice of medicine in Bridgeton, and soon became one of our leading physicians. He was a member of the New Jersey Medical Society, and a former President of the Cumberland County Medical Society. For a number of years he was Superintendent of Public Schools. Dr. Elmer married Miss Maggie Holmes, daughter of Bloomfield Holmes, by whom he has three children. The deceased physician had been suffering for some time from a chronic affection of the heart, but was not thought to be dangerous until a few days previous to the end. Dr. Elmer was universally esteemed and very popular with his patients, by whom he was greatly loved."
