Sylvia Joyce Watkins was the second of nine children born to the union of James and Carolyn Mitchell. Her parents and one brother, Michael preceded her in death.

She was born on August 10, 1945 in Beckley, West Virginia and raised in Detroit, Michigan; where she accepted Christ at an early age.

Sylvia graduated from Central High School in Detroit, earned an Associate’s Degree from Saddleback College, and a Bachelor’s Degree in history from CalState Fullerton.

On August 20, 1965 Sylvia married her lifelong love Ronnie Watkins. Together they raised two sons, Ronnie Jr., and Reginald "Reggie". This year, they were blessed to celebrate 50 years of matrimony.

Sylvia and Ron shared a wonderful life traveling the country, due to his military career but their travels did not end there. They enjoyed Hawaii, the Bahamas, Barbados, and many other exotic places together and Sylvia loved going to the casino and she did it often. Sylvia also loved watching political news, shows, and sports. One might say she was a sports fanatic! Kobe Bryant was her favorite basketball player. She also enjoyed tennis and every one of her friends and family members knew not to call her if Serena Williams was playing.

Sylvia was passionate about life. She was honest straight to the point and very intelligent. She enjoyed her work as a substitute teacher in the Metro School District.

Of all the places she’s been, Sylvia’s love was southern California.

Sylvia leaves to cherish her memory husband, Ronnie, Sr.; sons, Ronnie Jr. and "Reggie"; brothers, Bauford, Gerald, Kenneth (Yolanda) and Ronald (Wayne); sisters, Rosemary Custard (Robert), Cynthia Brown (Rocicile) and Carolyn; mother- in-law, Catherine Watkins; and a host of nieces, nephew, friends and colleagues.
