Mrs. James Barnes
Alice Elizabeth McDonald was born at Kewanee, Ill., August 24, 1859 and at the age of 6 years moved with her parents to Loveloy, Ill., where she grew to womanhood. She was married to James Franklyn Barnes at Bouda [sic - Buda] Ill., in February, 1880 and a year later they moved to Three Oaks, Michigan. They came to Ord in 1887 and this was their home for 12 years, when in 1899 they bought land in Greeley county and that has been their home since. They are always classed, however, as early settlers of Ord and they have always spoke of coming home when they visited here.
Mrs. Barnes was taken ill a week or more ago and the first of the present week was brought to the Ord Hospital in order that she might have the best possible care and it was there that she died August 31st, aged 66 years and 7 days.
There were 15 children born to Mr. and Mrs. Barnes, nine boys and six girls. Three died in infancy and 12 grew to manhood and womanhood. One son, Harvey, preceded his mother in death since and she is survived by her aged husband and 6 sons and 5 daughters. The children are Bertha Cronk of Greeley, Inez Wilson of Ord, Elva Arnold of Ord, Howard Barnes of Ord, George Barnes of Horace, Chester Barnes of Ord, Theodosia Daily of Ord, Ellis Barnes of Greeley, Elsie Canning of Grand Island, Truman Barnes of Greeley, Herschell Barnes of Grand Island. There are 18 grandchildren, three brothers, W. H. McDonald of Burwell, Thomas F. McDonald of Hastings, and Harry McDonald of Amelia, Nebraska.
When a child Mrs. Barnes was christened a Catholic but later in life she united with the Methodist church of Ord and her funeral was held from there Wednesday afternoon, Pastor Maynard, assisted by Rev. Brill of the U.B. Church, officiating. Interment was in the Ord cemetery.
Mrs. Barnes was a good woman, a faithful wife and mother and was universally esteemed for her many sterling qualities.
