John M. Selig, age 89, of Lexington, Indiana, passed away on Friday, September 25, 2015 at Baptist Health in Louisville, Kentucky. He was born on February 23, 1926 in Jefferson County, Indiana, the son of John William and Blanche Arbuckle Selig.

Mr. Selig was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served from January 11, 1944 to August 14, 1945, and achieved the rank of Seaman 2nd Class.

He was a 1944 graduate of the former Hanover High School and 1950 graduate of Hanover College. At Hanover College, he was a member of the Varsity H Club, having lettered in baseball and football all four years. In football, he was All Conference for three years and All State for two. He was also a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He received his Master's Degree from the University of Illinois. Later, he did graduate work in Math and Computer Science at the University of Oklahoma, the University of Alabama, Huntsville, and Purdue University.

He retired in 1974 as a Mathematics teacher for the State of Illinois and as a mathematician for the federal government. He also coached athletic teams and Math teams, winning the Kankakee Valley Championship in his last year of teaching.

He worked as a mathematician with Dr. Wernher von Braun Space Team for NASA at the Marshall Space Flight Center. He helped put astronauts on the moon in 1969. The Space Team, however, did not celebrate their feat until the astronauts were safely back on earth. During summers, he worked as a mathematician at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland.

After retiring from teaching in Illinois, he worked at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. He retired from the U.S. Army Research and Engineering Center having developed the Sample Data Collecting Program for the Patriot Missile System used during the Gulf War and is still being used in the Middle East. He retired in 1992 after 21 years of federal service.

He was a life member of the National Education Association, the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, Disabled American Veterans and American Legion. He was a member of the Association of Computing Machinery, a 50 year member of Schmidlap Lodge # 408, F. & A.M., a life member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) and served as legislative officer for several years for the local NARFE Chapter #1677, the University of Illinois Alumni Association and was on the Board of Directors of the Hanover College Alumni Association. He served on the Kent Water Board of Directors and was formerly on the Board of Directors of the Jefferson County Farm Bureau. He was also a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church.

Mr. Selig enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and RV camping, growing pumpkins and other produce and attended the Farmer's Market in Scottsburg, Indiana. He also enjoyed watching Indiana University basketball games and University of Alabama football games on TV. He and his brother James enjoyed making maple syrup.

Survivors include his wife, the former Mary France Lear, whom he married on March 29, 1958 in Robinson, Illinois; one son, John Mark Selig of Lexington; one daughter and son-in-law, Caroline and Jerry Jones of Friendswood, Texas; one brother, James Selig of Lexington; two grandsons and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Orville Selig on July 12, 2015.

The Reverend John Meyer will conduct The Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2015, at Saint Patrick Catholic Church, with interment to follow in Saint Patrick Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Lytle Funeral Chapel from 5 to 8 PM Tuesday and from 10 to 10:30 AM Wednesday.

Schmidlap Lodge # 402, F. & A.M. will conduct services at 7:15 PM Tuesday, and the Rosary will be recited at 7:45 PM Tuesday. Both will be conducted at the funeral home.

The Honor Guard of Jefferson Post #9, American Legion will conduct military services at the cemetery.

The family request memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
