Obituary from the Sacramento Bee......

Ewing Hass
Ex -aide to Sen Kuchel
At his request, no services will be held for Ewing Hass, a longtime Sacramento resident who enjoyed a prominent career in public service and private business.

He died Friday at a local convalescent home at age 84.

Mr. Hass, a native of Downey and a 1933 University of Southern California graduate, was a longtime aide to former U.S. Sen. Thomas H. Kuchel, whom he met in college. When Mr. Kuchel was appointed state controller, Mr. Hass worked as his chief deputy. When Mr. Kuchel was named U.S. senator by Gov. Earl Warren in 1953, Mr. Hass went to Washington, D.C., as his administrative assistant. He was there seven years. He later returned to Sacramento to make his permanent home.

Before going into public service in 1946, Mr. Hass was co- owner of the Arcadia Tribune in Los Angeles County.

In 1972, Mr. Hass returned to public life when he was appointed by Gov. Ronald Reagan as chairman of the Unemployment Appeals Board and continued to serve under Gov. Jerry Brown. He retired in
1975.

During World War II, Mr. Hass served in the Pacific for three years, retiring from the Navy as a lieutenant commander.

He was affiliated with Ben Ali Shrine, Sutter Club, the Jesters, Pi Kappa Alpha and USC alumni associations.

Mr. Hass is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gerry; a daughter, Susan Skinner of Mountain View; and a sister, Myda Stahl of Downey.

The family requests that any remembrances be sent to a charity of the donor's choice.
