Ira sold his land in Nash and Franklin Co, NC and moved his family with several other families to Alabama in 1818. He served as a judge in the early courts of Clarke Co. and is credited as one of the early organizers of the town of Suggsville, platted and recorded in 1821.
His grave was once marked with a headstone placed by his son, John Wesley Portis, but it has been vandalized and is no longer there.
His first wife was Mary Ann Goodwin (1780-1819), whom he married in 1805. They had 7 children.
His second wife was Mary Elizabeth Marsh (1795-1840), whom he married in 1820. they had 3 children.
