Bruce played Australian Rules Football after being invited to train with Essendon and made his debut as an 18 year old. He then went on to play for Brighton for a few years before being picked up by South Melbourne where he played 81 games, scoring 44 goals.
In his final VFL appearance at the 1914 Grand Final he was noted as the best on ground in their narrow loss to Carlton. His football career ended after the outbreak of World War I.
