James Gordon Frierson, 75, of Johnson City, TN, passed away on September 25, 2015, after a lengthy illness.

He was born to Charles Davis Frierson, Jr. and Margaret Purifoy Frierson on April 9, 1940, in Jonesboro, AR. A graduate of Arkansas State University with a degree in Economics, he received his J.D. (1965) and M.B.A. (1969) from the University of Arkansas. He married the former Kay Lynn Coleman on December 23, 1966, in Jonesboro, AR.

After receiving his law degree, he practiced law in Jonesboro, AR, with Frierson, Walker, and Snellgrove before starting his teaching career at Arkansas State University. Following a brief tenure at Pittsburgh State University, he moved to East Tennessee State University where he was a professor in the College of Business, Department of Management and Marketing, for 34 years. He was awarded two of the university’s top honors: Distinguished Faculty Member in 1977 and the ETSU Foundation Research Award in 1986.

In the course of his career, he published 5 books, over 300 journal articles, and contributed to a variety of other books and publications. He volunteered his time to many businesses and organizations as a consultant on employment law.

A lover of the outdoors, he traveled whenever possible and enjoyed visiting national parks and wildlife areas. His favorite summers were spent in Yellowstone National Park, and he loved walking the trails around East Tennessee.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Lynn Coleman Frierson; son, John Graham Frierson, of Austin, TX; daughter, Sarah Frierson, of Memphis, TN; brother, Charles Davis Frierson, III (Carolyn), of Jonesboro, AR; sister, Neville Frierson Bryan (John), of Lake Bluff, IL; sister, Cherry Frierson, of Jonesboro, AR; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The family will greet friends to share memories from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Monday, September 28, 2015 in the Sunset Room of Tetrick Funeral & Cremation Services, Johnson City.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all memorials be made to: Mended Hearts, Chapter 259, in care of Dr. George Granger, Treasurer, 616-D Franklin Court Square, Johnson City, TN 37604; or the Gary Sinise Foundation (for wounded veterans), PO Box 50008, Studio City, CA 91614-5001.
