Betty Ellen Gower, the oldest child of Ray Alvin and Norma Marie Smedley Gower was born on April 3, 1950 at Doctor Mary’s house in Phillipsburg, Ks. She passed away on September 24, 2015 at the Logan Manor in Logan, KS at the age of 65.

She grew up in Phillipsburg where she graduated from 8th grade. Her love for Agra helped her decide to attend Agra High School from which she graduated in 1968. She attended Fort Hays State University and graduated in three years with a B.S. in history. She attended graduate school for library science at LSU for one semester.

Betty had numerous jobs during her life. After working in Smith Center and Topeka, KS for several years she moved to Denver, Colorado. She worked for the United Bank of Denver, Travel Express, and the Arapahoe County Library District. Upon her retirement from the Library, she moved home to Agra, KS.

She loved the mountains and enjoyed taking visitors on day trips to Pikes Peak, Idaho Springs, and to the dinner theater in Golden. She became an avid Broncos fan and took in many games and concerts. She enjoyed traveling the world and took many trips overseas and within the United States with friends and family. The Bahamas and Paris were two of her favorite destinations.

When travel became too difficult, she used her knowledge of history to explore the genealogies of friends and families. There was excitement in her voice when she told of finding a family connection to European royalty, the founding of America, and common ancestors with her friends.

Of all the places that she traveled, she loved Agra best. She often remarked to her sister Annette that she enjoyed sitting in her recliner watching the crops grow and hearing the birds sing. She would often laugh and say a tractor or neighbor’s truck drove by. She loved to declare that she was a farm girl. She loved baby calves, wheat fields, and sunflowers. She visited with her cousins, best friend from High School, and sister almost every day. In her retirement she wrote the Agra News for the local papers, attended the Heartland Worship Center while typing the weekly church bulletin.

Betty made life-long friends wherever she went. She always had a smile on her face and was happy to see friends and family. In fact, many of her friends were cousins that were very close. Her greatest love was the Gower family picnics and Christmas party. She loved to hear the laughter, and play cards or other games while enjoying the delicious food. The many family and friends that came to visit made her face light up in her final days. Those that could not visit sent their best wishes via social media.

Her love of animals was legendary. She would stop traffic to help a turtle cross the road and adopted many stray cats throughout her lifetime. Her philosophy regarding cats was “the more, the merrier.”

Her faith in God was the foundation of her sweet personality. She would do anything for anyone in need. Her home was always open to friends and family that needed a place to stay or a word of comfort. She always told people that she loved them – not many people are brave enough to say that but her faith gave her strength and courage.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Norma Gower, an infant brother, Ronald Dean, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She leaves behind to grieve her sister Annette of Springfield, Missouri; brother John, his wife Penny and son Kyle of Seal Beach, California; Uncle Lyle Allen, Phillipsburg; and many beloved cousins, dear friends, and 3 fur babies (Tipsy, Squeakers, and Miss Kitty).

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, September 28, 2015 at the Heartland Worship Center, Agra, KS, with Pastor Jonathan Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in the Agra Cemetery, Agra.

Miss Gower will lie in state from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from Noon until 9 p.m. Sunday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. for visitation at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Heartland Worship Center, Watching Over Whiskers or the F. Lee Doctor Library.
