Luther is a son of Thomas Francis Gardner and Eliza Curtis. Born and raised in Arizona, he married Peggy Bradshaw. They became parents to four daughters.

From The Idaho Statesman (Boise, ID) - Tuesday, August 16, 1966:
CASPER - Wyoming (AP) - Authorities have reached the scene of a two-month-old plane crash that killed three persons - two of them from Idaho.
The pilot was Luther Gardner, 44, of Murtaugh, Idaho. Passengers were his daughter, Jacquelyn, 16, and his brother, Neal, of Duncan, Arizona. [The brothers were in the cattle business.]
The plane was on a flight to Kentucky when it crashed. It left Dillon, Montana and failed to report again.
The Gardners had moved to Idaho from Richmond, Kentucky. Luther Gardner's wife was driving to Richmond from the new home in Murtaugh and was to meet the plane there. [They had planned to take summer classes at Eastern Kentucky State College.]
A search was conducted throughout Wyoming, Montana, and Nebraska. It had been unsuccessful until the wreckage was spotted Saturday. The bodies were removed Sunday. Authorities said the plane was probably forced down during thunderstorms in the area.
