Arthur M. CHIZUM, 81, 56328 Ash Road. Osceola, died at 6:05 a.m. Friday at his residence.
He was born Sept. 4, 1918, in Fulton, the son of George and Mabel HOLLER CHIZUM and married Ruth E. MEDICH on Sept. 24, 1993, in Elkhart. She survives.
Re was the owner~operator of Osceola Dragway for 43 years. Built in 1957, it was the oldest one-operator drag strip in the United States. He farmed throughout his life, also working as a real estate broker and insurance agent in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. He was a licensed pilot, having begun flying at age 27, and enjoyed flying his own airplane. He was schooled through the 10th grade.
Survivors include his wife, Elkhart; one son, Max A. CHIZUM, Osceola; two stepdaughters, Karen (Mrs. Greg) CROWNER, Tallahassee, Fla. Kathy AUSTIN, Huntington Beach, Calif.; one stepson, Tim MEDICH, with wife Tenri, South Bend; five grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; three brothers, William [CHIZUM], of Warsaw, Dean [CHIZUM], of Mishawaka, and Lee [CHIZUM], of South Bend: one sister, Clara (Mrs. Bill) JAMES, Anderson, S.C. He was preceded by a sister, Anna FINLEY, and his brother Marion [CHIZUM].
Visitation is 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Osceola Dragway, followed by a 6 p.m. funeral service at the drag strip. Cremation will follow the service. Memorials may be made to Elkhart General Community Hospice.
