William, the son of Jasper E. Herring and Dora M. Herring of Hampton Virginia enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve and went on extended active duty on February 1, 1966 in Richmond VA. In Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company B, 1st Amtrac Battalion, 3d MARDIV (Rein)FMF.

During the month of July the Battalion continued in general support of the 3d Marine Division from the Cua Viet Port Facility in northern Quang Tri Province.

On July 7, a patrol from Company B moving towards their ambush site some 8 kilometers east of Gio Linh was ambushed by the NVA near the village of Ha Loi Tay. Engaged with a superior enemy force reinforcements arrived and joined the battle. Three men were killed during the engagement, one of the casualties was Cpl William Herring who was killed in action by hostile rifle fire.
