Charles C Hayley was born November 5, 1915 to Charles C Hayley, Sr. and Josephine Elam Hayley in Dallas, Texas. He died on September 24, 2015 @ Hospice of Wichita Falls. Funeral services will held at 2:00 PM, Monday, September 28, 2015 at Lamar Baptist Church, 1100 Harrison Street, Wichita Falls, Texas with Rev. Tommy Free officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Cemetery under the direction of Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home.
He graduated from Sunset High School in Dallas and N. T. A. C. in Arlington and received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee in 1940. He began practice in Electra. In 1941, he and Sammy Pauline Lowe were married in Mart, Texas. In 1946, he moved his practice to Wichita Falls to become junior partner to Dr. H. A. Harbour. Following Dr. Harbour's move to Kerrville it was a single practice until joined in 1978 by son Dr. Joe Hayley and later by Dr. Terry Kirkland. Granddaughter Dr. Jodi Hayley Streich entered the practice in 2008 and grandson Dr. John Hayley entered in 2010. Dr. C. C. retired from practice in 2005 after 65 years, but retained his active license to practice to become holder of the oldest optometric license in the State of Texas.
Dr. Hayley and Sammy were active in the First Baptist Church of Electra and the Lamar Baptist Church of Wichita Falls until her death in 1990.
Ordained deacon in Electra, he served as Sunday School Director and was active in Boy Scouts and Lions Club. In Lamar Baptist Church he was Sunday School Director, Chairman of Deacons and chaired numerous committees including those charged with building the sanctuary and the Family Activities Center and acquiring the Priddy House. He was the chairman and parliamentarian of the Wichita Archer Clay Baptist Association, and a member of the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. For twenty years he conducted optometric clinics under the auspices of the Rio Grande River Ministry in cities and villages in Mexico along the Rio Grande River. Following his marriage on April 12, 1991 to Connie Mayo, she accompanied him and assisted in the clinics.
He served on the Wichita Falls Planning Commission, chairing it for one term, and was a member of the NORTEX Regional Planning Commission TRACS Review Committee from its inception. Membership and activity in the Lions Club continued in Wichita Falls Founder Club until his illness prevented him for a total of 65 years. He was a donor to the Red Cross Blood Bank and through years of membership held offices in the Northwest Texas Optometric Society and the Texas Optometric Association.
His survivors are: Wife of 24 ½ years, Connie Mayo Hayley, daughter Martha Shelton and husband Frances Shelton of Radford, Virginia; grandson Dr. Jeffrey Shelton and wife Karen of Blacksburg, Virginia; granddaughter Dr. Hayley Shelton Arnold and husband Keith Arnold of Hudson, Ohio; son Dan Hayley and wife, Neva of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; granddaughter Hannah Olmstead and husband Todd Olmstead of Tulsa, Oklahoma; son Dr. Joe Hayley and wife Diana of Wichita Falls; granddaughter Dr. Jodi Hayley Streich and husband Kyle Streich of Wichita Falls; grandson Dr. John Hayley and wife Dr. Lauren Powell Hayley of Wichita Falls; and great-grandchildren Ryan and Helen Arnold; Easton, Harrison and Hudson Streich, Giuliana Olmstead, and Caroline Hayley.
As well as his in-laws, Charles and Pearl Mayo of Wichita Falls; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tommy and Carla Mayo of Bellevue, Texas and 3 nephews; Bob & Marilyn Dougherty of Richardson, Texas; T. J. and Celeste Mayo and sons Zeke, Zeb and Zander of Archer City, Texas; and Nathan and Randilyn Mayo and daughter Claire of Vernon, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Miriam Dougherty and husband Howard and grandson Stephen Hayley.
Family visitation will be @ Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home on Sunday, September 27th from 6:00 – 7:00 pm.
