Mary Elizabeth Downey (1872-1950) was a nationally known librarian and lecturer considered to be a pioneer of the modern library movement. In 1895 she received a bachelor's degree in classics from Denison University, Granville, Ohio, then studied library science at the University of Chicago. As a librarian, educator, and administrator, she promoted library science as an academic discipline. In 1906, she became Director of the Chautauqua School for Librarians, a post she held for 30 years. She served as state library organizer in Ohio, Utah, and North Dakota. In 1923, she returned to Denison University as University Librarian and, during this period, earned her master's degree. She served on the American Library Association Council and the organization's Committee on Legislation. She was a member of the Equal Suffrage Association and later was involved in the National Woman's Party. Her obituary appeared in Library Journal, Vol. 75 (1950).
