Ila P. Thompson passed away Thursday, September 24, 2015 at Saint Thomas Rutherford hospital in Murfreesboro, Tennessee at the age of 92. Ila was born in Laclede County, Missouri and grew up on a farm near Sleeper. She and her siblings used to ride a horse in order to cross a stream on their way to school.

After graduating high school, Ila completed a secretarial program in Springfield, MO. During WWII, she enlisted in the US Navy, serving honorably for a year and a half until the war ended. During the war years, she fell in love with a handsome sailor from Iowa, Ray Thompson. They were married in 1946 and then resided in Cedar Rapids, IA where they raised their family. Ila went to work for Collins Radio, first as a factory worker on the night shift, and worked her way up to a position in human resources where she was in charge of setting up a computerized payroll system for what had become Rockwell Collins.

In 1985, Ila and Ray moved to Florida for a retirement of golf and good times until his death in 1996. Fourteen years later, Ila retired from golf and relocated to Murfreesboro to live near her daughter and family.

Ila was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; parents, Ray and Ethel McClure; sister, Edith Goetzlaff; and brothers, Earl and John Frederick “Fred” McClure.

She is survived by daughter, Sandra Cooper and husband Mike; son, David F. Thompson and wife Joy; grandson, David Cooper and wife Alicia; and great granddaughter, Mary Kate Cooper.

Ila was a member of North Lake Presbyterian Church in Lady Lake, FL. She was an avid bowler and golfer. She even made a hole in one when she was 82. She enjoyed beautiful flowers, ripe tomatoes, and fresh sweet corn.

Ila loved her family dearly and will be greatly missed by all of us.

At Ila’s request, there will be no memorial service. Ila will be laid to rest with military honors at Florida National Cemetery alongside her husband Ray.
