On November 19, 1992, the 16th anniversary of the Great American Smokeout, Walt Miller died from emphysema caused from smoking. . . . .the one thing that so many people could and should control.

Born October 4, 1926 in Milford, Utah to William Merrill Miller and Thekla James Miller. He married Nola J. Thomas Thompson, February 12, 1976 in Salt Lake City.

Survived by wife, Nola; stepchildren and their spouses, Susan and Ernie Baca, Salt Lake City; G. Stuart and Bobbie Thompson, Green River, Wyoming; Spencer and Ferria Thompson, Clearfield; Sylvia and Reggie Pacheco, Layton; Scott and Nicole Thompson, San Diego, California; Sally Thompson, Seattle, Washington; and 11 grandchildren.

Walt graduated from Westminster College and was employed with Union Pacific for 28 years. He was an active member of the F&AM Argenta Lodge #3 (Past Master); El Kalah Shrine; Demolay (Executive Officer and Member of International Supreme Council); Scottish Rite; York Rite #1; Commandery of Knights Templar (Honorary Past Commander); Red Cross of Constantine. Walt and Nola started and hosted the Better Breathers Club of the American Lung Association of Utah.

Walt loved hunting, fishing, geology, traveling, sharing his experiences in life and the history of Utah. He will be remembered for his great respectability and patience.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Dan Rawson and his staff; Carrie Miller and Terese Fowler, his loving care providers; Tippie, Buddy and Boots, his pets that were always at his side; Community Nursing Service, and PEHP, the insurance company that provided so much consideration and understanding.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 23, 12 noon at the Evans & Early Mortuary Chapel, 574 East 100 South, Salt Lake City, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Graveside rites by Argenta Lodge, F&AM, Mount Olivet Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers family requests donations be made to the American Lung Association of Utah or the Knights Templar Eye Foundation.
