Lieutenant Robert Steven Miles MC: His Service Number is Lieutenant/Unknown. He served in the 8th Battalion, Australian Inf, AIF. He was born at Perth, Western Australia in September 1891. He enlisted at Stawell Victoria in May 1915 aged 23 years. He embarked from Melbourne for Egypt per the H.M.A.T. "Themistocles," on the 28th of January 1916. He then embarked from Alexandria for France per the H.M.A.T. "Transylvania," on the 29th of March 1916. He fought on the Western Front until he received a gun shot wound to the left elbow on the 26th of July 1916. He was transferred to England for treatment. After recovery he transferred back to France where he was promoted to Lieutenant on the 31st of December 1916. On returning to battle he received gun shot wounds to both legs and a fractured right femur on the 22nd of April 1917. He was awarded the Military Cross but died of his wounds the same day aged 24 years. Robert Steven Miles is the son of Elizabeth Field Miles of 98 Tate Street, Leedervalle in Western Australia; and the loving husband of Alberta Victoria Miles, of 4, Lord Street, Caulfield, Victoria, Australia. NOTE: He was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry and devotion to duty; he led his men with great dash and skill and was of the greatest assistance in consolidating the captured position, driving the intense hostile bombardment which followed. He set a splendid example to his men until he was severely wounded.
