Joe Louis Mont-gomery was born on November 29, 1939 in Spartan-burg, South Carolina to the late Prater Montgomery and Daisy Viola Dawkins-Montgomery.

Joe, the eleventh of twelve children from this union, made his transition to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 3:45pm while being cared for in his home after being ill for one year.

Joe attended Carver High School in the Spartanburg, South Carolina school system and thereafter worked for Draper and Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Joe migrated to Brooklyn, New York in his early twenties where he lived for two years prior to moving back to Spartanburg, South Carolina where he met and married Eddie Sue Dodd fifty-one years ago. To their union was born five children: Dirk Negal (Kim Williams, companion), Scheena Renee, Carlos (Lucy Salgado, companion), Kelly Lynn and Kimberly Ann (Michael E. Young).

Joe retired from Armstrong World Industries in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1996 after working for thirty years. He had previously also worked on a part-time basis at Conestoga View Nursing Home and Ponderosa Steakhouse in Lancaster, Penn-sylvania.

Joe was a past member of Bethel AME Church under the leadership of Reverend Edward Bailey. He served on the usher board and truly loved being an usher. Most recently, he was under watch care at Ray's Temple Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Reverend Jerome Hayes.

Joe was a lover of people and did not have a shame bone in his body. He could talk with you from sun-up to sun-down if you let him. You could always find him at the South Duke Street Turkey Hill daily socializing with his buddies for hours. On many occasions, his family would have to go out to look for him because he had been gone for so long. Previously, he frequented Conestoga View Nursing Home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to visit and talk with the residents as that was something he loved to do. He also loved to sing and enjoyed gospel music as well as songs recorded by his all-time favorites: Sam Cooke, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Temptations, Alicia Keys, Robin Thicke and various other artists. He also loved working on crossword puzzles.

Joe leaves to cherish his memory: his wife and children; his two grandsons, Benjamin Butts Montgomery and Jaden Ahmad Montgomery (both of Lancaster, PA); his granddaughter, Michelle Wilson (Lake Wells, Florida); his sister, Francenia Mont-gomery (Brooklyn, NY); his brother, Charlie Montgomery (Brooklyn, NY) and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends; his sisters-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Robinson, Evonia Anderson and Dorothy Lee Jeter (all of Spartanburg, SC), Margaret Dodd (Lancaster, PA) and brother-in-law, Leslie Dodd (Lancaster, PA). He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Robert, Prater, James and John; his sisters: Mary Nell Williams, Victoria Montgomery, Daisy Rae Thompson, Dora Jean Grant and Minnie Lee Addison.

Funeral services will be held at Ray’s Temple Church of God in Christ, 49 South Ann Street, Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Monday, September 28, 2015 at 11am with Reverend Jerome Hayes officiating. The public viewing will take place from 9am – 11am. Interment to follow in Mellinger Mennonite Cemetary.

Arrangements entrusted to Emmett Golden Hunt Memorial Chapel, INC. Funeral Home, 427 East Lincoln Highway, Coatesville, Pennsylvania 19320, 610-380-8000.
