S. Chris Johnson, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully in Salt Lake City, Utah, surrounded by family on January 9, 2006 at the age of 86. He was born on December 29, 1919 in Huntington, Utah to O. Ray Johnson and Bertha Maud Wakefield. He was blessed with three sisters, Helen Reitz (deceased), Zola Guymon (deceased) and Pauline Robinson of Eugene, Oregon. He married his college sweetheart, Faye Hunter, in the Salt Lake Temple, September 7, 1946. She has been his trusted companion for 59 years. They are the parents of four daughters.
He was a man of complete integrity who had an abiding love for his wife, his family, his fellowmen and the Lord. He served an honorable mission in Brazil for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1939 to 1941. He received his Bachelors Degree at Brigham Young University and his Masters Degree at New York University. He worked for Sears Roebuck and Company for 33 years, retiring as the Utah-Idaho group manager.
He enjoyed traveling with his family and friends. He was an avid photographer and enjoyed his association with the Dirty Shirts golf group. He was an active participant in the community, serving on various governing boards including Zions Bank, Questar and Utah Symphony. He served as Chairman of the Board of Holy Cross Hospital and President of the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. His vision for the community was formally recognized when he received the Giant of the City Award in Salt Lake City and the Joseph Silverstein Award from the Utah Symphony.
He served his country as a U.S. Marine in Okinawa and was made an honorary Brigadier General for the Utah National Guard. He was a member of the Salt Lake Police Colonels. He and Faye served a Leadership Mission and were Guides on Temple Square.
He is survived by his wife, Faye, daughters Jan (Craig) Zwick, Frankfurt, Germany; Peg (Kip) Wade, Salt Lake City; Barbara (Scott) Smith, Park City, Utah; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carolyn.
Friends and family may call Friday, January 13, from 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 14, at 11:00 a.m. with prior viewing at 10:00 a.m. in the Grandview Ward, 2930 South 2000 East. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery, 3401 South Highland Drive.
