His parents, Casper and Martha Sidwell Porter. They were married May 23, 1849 in Decatur County, Indiana. They both died when he was a small boy. His grandparents gave him a home and brought him to Iowa and lived near Fairmount (small town that used to be beween Prairie City and Monroe) until his marriage to Virginia Bitting on January 7, 1875. They had four children of which three survive. They are: Mrs. Ida Livingston of Des Moines, Harry of Fairmount and Faye of Monroe.
