Penelope Edwards married in 1765, Col. William Pope. She was the daughter of Hayden (1716-1805) and Penelope Sanford Edwards (1723-1808), of Fauquier County, Va. Her father was a son of William and Mary Edwards of Lancaster or Westmoreland County, Va., and moved from Virginia to Bourbon County, Ky. around 1785 where he reared a large and wealthy family. Penelope Sanford, wife and cousin of Hayden Edwards, was a granddaughter of Sir Humphrey and Rebecca Walker Sanford. A brother of Penelope Edwards was John Edwards (1748-1837) who became U.S. Senator, 1792-95, when Kentucky became a commonwealth in 1792. Another brother, Lt. Benjamin Edwards (1752-1826), was the father of Governor Ninian Edwards (1775-1833), of Illinois. Robert Edwards, of New York, a brother of Hayden Edwards, died leaving property of immense value known as "the Great Edwards Estate."
Penelope and her husband, Colonel Pope, raised a large family, of whom the following eight lived to become of age and married, Penelope (1769-1821), Gov. John (1770-1845), Jane (1772-1852), William, Jr. (1775-1844), Col. Alexander (1781-1826), Judge Nathaniel (1784-1850), Elizabeth (c1787-1850), and Hester Pope (1788-1868).
