Active and a determined worker at the numerous tasks that appealed to him as needing doing Whitesville's oldest resident, Jared LeRoy Ainsworth, aged 91 years on February 16, 1931, only ceased his activities when obliged to by his final illness of the past seven weeks which terminated on Saturday, October 10, 1931 at 5:45 a.m. Death was due to the gradual decline that comes with so great age.

Mr. Ainsworth was born at New Woodstock, N.Y., but came to Whitesville in early life with his parents and had always lived here save for a time spent on his claim in Montana. His marriage to Julia E. Mather occurred on January 1, 1862 at Wileyville. To him were born six children: Jared, Anna, Amelia, and Willard who preceded their parents in death, and Walter R. Ainsworth of this village and Mrs. M.W. Reynolds of Wellsville who survive.

Funeral services were held from the late home at 2 p.m., Monday October 12, 1931 with Rev's H.J. Marquis of the local Methodist church, assisted by Rev. L.J. Engler of Knoxville, Pa. officiating and Fred Wildman directing Interment in Rural Cemetery in the family plot.

Through the courtesy of Fred Covel and Robert Irving of Wellsville, "Taps" were sounded at the grave and the bugle used was the one used by Mr. Ainsworth's regiment during the Civil War and this gesture was at the request of the deceased.

Our venerable townsman, who was a member of the former Baptist Association and G.A.R., was the last Whitesville member of the the last named organization. Only the past Spring he had set numerous seedling trees in memory of his comrads gone before in selected places about town during the time he was engaged in reforesting a large plot of land he owned in West Union. Previously he had set trees on the grounds of Whitesville High School and had many plantings of various kinds on his residence lot in Main street.

Mr. Ainsworth saw much service in the Civil War.

Attending the funeral were the following out of town relatives: Misses Mary and Mable Elmore, Mrs. Jane Price, New Woodstock; Walter Rew of Friendship; John Hyde of Scio; Mrs. Gertrude Ainsworth of Seneca Falls; A.I. White and Bert Hosmer of Hornell.
