Born in Toombs County, Georgia, he was a son of the late Ernest Everett and Kitty Pearl Grimes Kirkland. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy, having served in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Kirkland earned his Bachelor’s degree from Georgia Teacher’s College and his Master’s degree from the University of Georgia. He taught mathematics and computer science at the Citadel for 28 years and taught computer science at North Greenville College for ten years. He was a member of Simpsonville First Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, Mr. Kirkland is survived by three daughters, Deborah Jean Siebert and husband Michael, Karen René Borke and husband Jeff, and Joy Charla Denhoff; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey, Linda, Jason, Mark, Marcia, Scott, and Dakota; and nine great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Carl Ellis Kirkland; a sister, Doris Kirkland Walden; and a son-in-law, Donald Gary Denhoff.
