Roger Bateman, retired vice president of contracts for Matson Navigation Corp., died of glioblastoma multiforme Sunday in Walnut Creek. He was 70.

The native of Philadelphia lived in Walnut Creek 33 years. He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1965, retiring as a lieutenant commander. He attended Brown University, the University of Louisville, Ky., and Northwestern University in Chicago. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He taught himself to play piano at age 65, and enjoyed playing trumpet, walking and model railroading.

He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Rosemarie Bateman of Walnut Creek; 4 daughters and nine grandchildren. His first wife of 32 years, Camilla Bateman, died in 1979.

Services: Noon memorial Thursday at Treasure Island Naval Station Chapel. Private inurnment will be at Hull's Walnut Creek Chapel.
