Mr. Billy Lee Haynes, Sr., 89, of Waycross died Wednesday morning at his residence after an extended illness. He was born in Cairo, Illinois to the late Albert Nash Haynes and Christiana Seifert Haynes. He moved to Waycross at an early age and has made it his home for the majority of his life except for a few years living on Jekyll Island. He worked as a machinist for Atlantic Coastline Railroad before his retirement in 1973 after thirty-two years of service. After his retirement from the railroad, he owned and operated Haynes Industries from 1973-1986, which specialized in Boxcar repair.

Mr. Haynes was a member of Central Baptist Church, where he served as superintendent of the Senior Adult Sunday School Classes as long as his health permitted. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an accomplished woodworker. Mr. Haynes served in World War II and the occupation of Japan, in the South Pacific, in the 77th Infantry Division of the United States Army 307th Regiment 1st Battalion. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amanda Lee Hanson and a sister, Patsy Youmans.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Grace Thompson Haynes of Waycross, four children, Christiana Hanson, Billy Lee Haynes, Jr., and his wife Joy, Warren Nash Haynes and his wife Jeanette, Rebecca Diane Haynes all of Waycross, six grandsons, Richard Perkins and his wife Nikki, Jeremy Nash Haynes and his wife Cameo, Billy “Trey” Haynes, III, Robert Austin Haynes, Dalton Warren Haynes, Samuel Bryant Haynes, two great grandchildren, Jonathan Haynes, Jackson Haynes and numerous other relatives.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday in the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment will follow in the Greenlawn Mausoleum. Members of Central Baptist Church’s Senior Adult Sunday School Classes have been asked to serve as honorary pallbearers and should gather at the funeral home by 10:45 a.m., Friday.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m., at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Satilla, 808 Evergreen Way, Waycross, Georgia 31501, or to Central Baptist Church, “Operation Christmas Child”, 201 Ava Street, Waycross, Georgia 31501.
