Sir Richard Carter was born 1490 at Watford, Hertfordshire, England the son of Sir John William Nicholas and Lady Ann Alice De Croxton De Carter.
He married in 1525 at Watford, Joan Elizabeth Bourchier the daughter of Sir John and Cecilia Daubeney Bourchier.

Richard Carter (ca. 1490-1558) of Watford and King’s Langley, son of William Carter of Watford, married Joan, and left a will (signed on 1 September 1558; proved 29 October 1558) naming three sons.. In 1546, he applied successfully for a coat of arms, later used by his grandson William Carter the vintner of London.

Richard was Lord Of The Manor of Garston near Watford in Hertfordshire England. [1] Richard CARTER of Garston, Hertsford, England, of which estate he received a grant from the Crown, 24 July 1544, "to Richard CARTER and Thomas PALMER and the heirs of the said Richard." He sold one moiety of the said estate to John RANDALL and Agnes, his wife. Robert CARTER bought back the moiety of the estate from Michael SAGER of Marsworth, Bucks and his wife, Margaret which they in turn had acquired from John RANDALL.
His will "Richard Carter of Garston, Watford yeoman (made 1/9/1558 proved 29/10/1558) names wife Joan, Sons John, William, Thomas, my sister Hyll, overseer Thomas Hyll of Waterdell, witn incl Thomas Hyll, John & Richard Carter. Inquisition PM dated 8/11/1558 (C142/116/86) ‘seised of half of the manor of Garston’. Richard died on the 29 Sep 1558 and bequeathed same to son Thomas, William C is eldest son aged 30 years or more.
