First Abbot of Belmont Abbey in Hereford, England, where he led for 14 years, from 1920 until his death in 1934. Born George Kindersley in Cuddalore, India, his father was Francis Martin Kindersley of the Indian Civil Service. Dom Aelred Kindersley, O.S.B., entered the Order of St. Benedict at Belmont Abbey in 1879, and professed solemn vows on Oct. 21, 1883. He was ordained a Catholic priest on Sept. 11, 1887, and was then a teacher for many years at Downside Abbey in Somerset. After serving as Procurator and Master of Novices at Downside, he was named Prior of Belmont Abbey in Hereford in 1915, the last of the Cathedral Priors. During his time as prior, Belmont Abbey School was opened in 1917. When Belmont was granted abbatial status in 1920, Dom Aelred was chosen to lead as first abbot. The abbey prospered under his watch, but the responsibility took a toll on his health. Abbot Aelred died while recuperating at Downside Abbey at the age of 73. He was interred at Belmont Abbey on Oct. 16, 1934.
