The third of 4 children, he moved with his family to Southern California when Jon was an infant. He attended grade school in Garden Grove and graduated from Bolsa Grande High School in 1960. He enrolled at Santa Ana Community College where he excelled in football - after never playing the game in high school -- and started in the 1961 Junior Rose Bowl. He later transferred to UC Davis where he graduated in 1965 with a degree in political science. He was an all-conference center in football for the Aggies. Jon married Katie in December 1965. They moved to Santa Ana, where they raised their family of two daughters, Jill and Ann, and one son, Jon L. Jon owned and operated a welding business for over 40 years. He was known for a tireless work ethic and skill in engineering solutions to complex problems. Jon and Katie moved to Oregon in the early 1990s. Jon continued his business, working with several local wineries along the way. Those service calls led to long friendships with local growers and Jon cemented his reputation as the man to call when something broke down, or when new facilities were going up. He never met a stranger and the days of his life were marked by his warm smile and kind demeanor. He was a devout Christian. Music was his passion, he was gifted guitarist and vocalist. He especially loved playing bluegrass and gospel. Over the years he was a happy member of several bands. He loved his farm and spent many happy hours on his pond and tending to the land. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, of Dayton OR, his daughters and their spouses, Jill Cooper (Todd Murray) and Ann Lawson (Brian). He had five grandchildren, Anya, (Josh Wachtel), Saige (Jonah) and Rome, Dylan, and Seamus Jon. He is also survived by two brothers, Bob Cooper and Larry Cooper. Jon was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lynne, and his son, Jon Leonard.
