Born in Raywood, Victoria, Australia. He was a miner whose skill at digging shafts and locating sources of water was gratefully acknowledged by his fellow troops of the 14t Battalion during their hot dry summer on the Gallipoli Peninsular. His efforts were mentioned in the official history of the 14th Battalion, otherwise known as "Jacka's Mob". He was reportedly weakened by his considerable physical efforts in digging for water and was evacuated to Malta where he died of dysentery on 27th September 1915.
