DR. C. S. SPITLER,
Son of John and Esther Spitler, was born at Potsdam, Ohio, July 25, 1867, departed this life, Oct. 16, 1912, aged 45 years, 2 months and 21 days. He was the youngest of a family 14 children, six of whom have preceded him to the better world. He was married July 23, 1893, to Ida B. Shank of Leotwood(?), Ohio. To this union were born two children, Wilbur and Mabel. He leaves a loving wife, two children, three brothers and four sisters to mourn their loss. The loss to the community will be greatly felt from both social and professional sides. He graduated from the medical college of Ohio at Cincinnati, in 1892, and began the practice of medicine at Dalton, Wayne county, Ind., moving from there to Mooreland, Henry county, Ind., where he practiced for eighteen years.
He was successful in his chosen profession from a professional and financial point of view.
He was a kind husband and father and true to his friends. He was a member of the fraternity of the Knights of Pythias. Dr. Spitler was not a member of any religious organization, although his admonitions came from a strong faith in the German Baptist church, from his parents and relatives who were consistent members of this organization. We do not know from any confession what his creed may have been but it could not have been a bad one. His relations to society as he found it would prove that he recognized the brotherhood of all men and the love that was the mission in Christ to teach the world. It is not the intention of these (?) to extol too highly the virtues he manifested and the self reliance he practiced throughout his career. There are other voices which we hear coming out from the solitudes of the tombs of those gone before. Words and voices which now make sound but which in years gone by have nurtured and admonished. One of several of these voices, now stilled forever come rolling through the dream clouds, words of welcome to mother and to father.
Our brother was filled with affection for all. He was put in training for a love which knows not sex, nor person, nor partiality, but a love which seeketh virtue, wisdom and friendship.
He was by nature, an observer and leaner. This seemed his permanent state, yet he once told the writer, "We are often made to think that our affections are but tents of a night."
There are times when rules and devotion absorb the man and especially in health the mind, the overarching vault, bright with galaxies of immutable lights and the warm loves and fears that sweep over us as clouds, must lose their fine character and blend with God to attain their own perfection. He believed in the truth that Jesus Christ is the Savior of mankind.
