DEATH CLAIMS
RIVER ENGINEER

William W. Abney Dies at Family Home --
Fifty Years on the Mississippi.

At the family home, 815 North Second street, yesterday afternoon at 2:40 o'clock, death claimed William W. Abney, congestion of the lungs being given as the immediate cause of death. His last illness covered a period of three weeks, though he had been in failing health for the last several years, with chronic heart trouble.

Mr. Abney was born April 1, 1847, being therefore in the sixty-seventh year of his life. He had always called Quincy his home, though the major portion of his life had been spent on the river. He had been a worker on boats, and in later years an engineer, for half a century, and was well and widely known. His last service on the river was with the boat "Black Hawk."

Surviving Mr. Abney are his widow Mrs. Margaret Abney; two sons: William of Quincy and Robert of St. Louis; and four daughters: Mrs. Charles McCarty of Quincy, Mrs. A. Johnson of Newark Nebraska, Mrs. J. Helmeson of St. Louis and Miss Mary of St. Louis. Also there are eight grandchildren, besides a wide circle of sorrowing friends.
