Ben Cauley Jr. played trumpet and sang for the Bar-Kays, which celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2015.
His daughter described him as a humble, shy man who came alive on stage.
"When you saw him, he was not pretentious. He was very humble," Cauley's daughter Chekita Cauley-Campbell said. "He loved music. He loved his family."
Cauley-Campbell said her father started singing in church when he was a child. He then went on to become a founding member of the Bar-Kays.
Cauley was the sole survivor of a 1967 plane crash that killed Otis Redding and four other Bar-Kay members.
"You know, he always said, 'it wasn't my time' and then he always, he had the will to live," Cauley-Campbell said. "He had the fight in him like none other."
After the crash, Cauley helped reform the Bar-Kays. He also went on to record with Stax artists like Isaac Hayes, Rufus Thomas, and The Staples.
In 2008, Stax Records created a scholarship in Cauley's name to honor his accomplishments.
"You know, he just knew how to entertain a crowd," Cauley-Campbell added. "And he loved doing it."
In June 2015, Cauley and the other members of the Bar-Kays were inducted into the Official Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame in Clarksdale, Mississippi.
Cauley was 67 years old. His official cause of death has not been released at this time, but his daughters said they know their father is at peace.
They had just one final message for him.
"We love you, Daddy."
