Vivian Mae (Brown) Hunter, age 89, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2012 at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan. She lived in Alanson, Michigan. Born on August 28, 1922, in Detroit, Michigan, to Sigrid (Fenner) Brown and Frank Brown, Vivian Mae Brown had five siblings: Marion (Brown) Sharette, Alden "Bus" Brown, Grace (Brown) Hall, Sumner "Bill" or "Charley" Brown, Ruth (Brown) Williams, and David Brown. Vivian was married to Homer Hunter in Detroit, Michigan, on June 13, 1941. They had two children, Wayne and Nancy. The Hunter family moved to Farmington, Michigan, in 1959, and visited northern Michigan frequently throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 1970, Vivian and Homer Hunter moved to Burt Lake, near Brutus, Michigan, and established Hale Manufacturing, Inc. in Alanson. The family spent many years and created countless memories on Burt Lake. Homer preceded Vivian in death on January 25, 1988. Throughout her later years, she also resided in Pellston and Cheboygan. In addition to being a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, Vivian was an integral part of the family business for over two decades. She was also a musician, teacher, poet, and had a passion for cooking, particularly baking. Throughout all of this, she loved to use humor to point out the ironies in life. Those who knew Vivian remember her as a bright light whose smile would illuminate a room. She lived her life for the benefit of others. Vivian celebrated each day as if it were a special occasion, frequently hosting parties. Perhaps most of all, Vivian enjoyed playing the organ and the piano for her church, retirement communities, family, and friends. She would never miss a chance to encourage an audience to join in the music. She also enjoyed flowers, gardening, and surprising people with gifts of her generosity. In her humorous and humble way, Vivian had a keen ability of subtly suggesting her preferences to those around her. Vivian Mae (Brown) Hunter is survived by son Wayne Hunter of Alanson, Michigan, daughter, Nancy Hunter of Levering, Michigan, and grandchildren: Seth Hunter of Austin, Texas, Eien Hunter-Ishikawa of Vancouver, B.C., Mandala Hunter-Ishikawa of Kellogg, Idaho, and Zen Hunter-Ishikawa of Washington, D.C., brother David Brown of Kingman, Arizona, many family members, friends, and her faithful cat, Loofa. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 29, at Stone Funeral Home, Petoskey, Michigan (231-347-2291). Visitation will be from noon until the time of service. Vivian M. Hunter will be permanently laid to rest at the Alanson Cemetery in Emmet County, Michigan. In life, Vivian embodied joy, humanity, and humility.
