Mrs. Rhoda McGrady
Funeral services for Mrs. Rhoda Ann (Grandma) McGrady, 98, Slab Fork, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in the Lester Church of God with the Rev. C. G. Eastwood in charge. Burial will be in McDonald Cemetery, Maple Meadow.
Grandma McGrady, as she was affectionately known to her friends and 185 direct descendants, died in a Beckley hospital at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday of pneumonia and complications resulting from a broken hip suffered from a fall Nov. 30.
Born at Laurel Fork, Va,, May 22, 1863, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mark Bowman. She and her husband, John Dixie McGrady, moved to Raleigh County 56 years ago. He preceded her in death in 1917.
Mrs. McGrady was an active church member and enjoyed reading her Bible, crocheting, knitting and visiting her family and friends until about two years ago when ill health and failing sight forced her to curtail her activities.
Her favorite past time was relating the hard times she experienced when she was growing up -- remember the days when a person worked from daylight until dark for 25 cents' pay.
Survivors include four sons, Charlie of Brenton, John of White Sulphur Springs, Sim of Lester, and W. P. of Fayetteville; and six daughters, Mrs. C. R. Webb of Glace, Mrs. J. F. Gillespie, Mrs. C. M. Meadows, and Mrs. May Cochran, all of Lester, Mrs. Patricia Velma of Harper Road, Mrs. George A. Nicely of Slab Fork with whom she had lived for the past 30 years. Other survivors include one brother, Lawrence Bowman of Pemberton; 44 grandchildren; 106 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren.
The body is at the Williams Funeral Home in Sophia, pending completion of arrangements.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
