Robert L. McAlum, age 81, passed away Saturday, September 19, 2015, at Hospice of The Golden Isles after a lengthy illness. He was born December 22, 1933, in Alamo, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hilton R. and Ruby Sumner McAlum.

Robert is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jeanette Watson McAlum; two daughters, Rhonda M. Knight (Jimmy) and Jana M. Comer (Emri) both of St. Simons Island; Three grandchildren, Brett Knight, Haley Comer, and Ryan Comer ; one sister, Linda Burke (Bill) of Alamo, Georgia; three brothers, Don McAlum (Rose) of Ft.Walton Beach, FL, William McAlum (Gloria) of Lake Charles, LA, and Harry McAlum of Greenwood, S.C.. Many nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends also survive.

Robert served his country in the U.S. Air Force for four years during the Korean Conflict. He also worked briefly with Southern Bell and Georgia Power Company. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a supervisor, with more than 30 years of service. After retirement, he worked several years at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.

Robert was a charter member of College Place United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Co Ed Sunday School Class. He served in many capacities at the church. He was a past member of the Masons and a member of the American Legion.

The service will be held Monday, September 21, at 11:00 AM at College Place United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. A private family burial will be held at Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. The family would like to offer special thanks to all of his caregivers, especially Jamie Jackson.

Pallbearers will be Gary McAlum, Patrick McAlum, Sean McAlum, John Carter, Earl Buckner, and Roy Rose. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Co Ed Sunday School class.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to College Place United Methodist Church, 3890 Altama Ave., Brunswick, GA 31520 or Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525.
