After graduating from the University of Richmond, George spent the next two years as a U.S. field secretary for his beloved fraternity Phi Gamma Delta. He then attended law school at the University of Virginia and joined Wharton Aldhizer and Weaver, PLC upon graduation in 1958. George spent his career as a business and estate attorney with the firm until his retirement in 2003. He held a position on the Rockingham National Bank board from the early 1960s through subsequent mergers serving on the Wachovia Bank board through 2005. George also served as the Rockingham County attorney and provided pro bono services to various veterans organizations for several decades. He had a passion for raising Angus cattle and he along with his wife developed a fine herd. He served his local community through leadership in the Elks and Lions clubs. Music was always an important part of George’s life and his barbershop quartets were two of his favorite outlets.
He was preceded in death by wife, Lois Marie Byerly Aldhizer (1942-2013), and a brother and sister, Jerry G. Aldhizer and Doris Reine Aldhizer Ditus (1928-2009).
George is survived by his son, George R. Aldhizer III and wife, Lisa, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two daughters, Mary Aldhizer Sloat and husband, John, of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and Carol Aldhizer Delia and husband, David, of Martinsville, N.J.; his children’s mother, Patricia Minor; as well as seven grandchildren and three nieces.
A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2015, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. The service will be followed by a reception at the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project or the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Free Medical Clinic.
