During the Civil War, James served in the Confederate Army along with his two brothers Robert and Riley. He enlisted at age 17 in 1862 joining Co. D of the 4th Kentucky Cavalry. This unit was under the overall command of Gen. John Hunt Morgan. He would have participated in Morgan's Raids into Indiana and Ohio in the summer of 1863. In records when he was 20 years old, he was described as 6' 1/2" tall, blue eyes, brown hair and fair complexion.
In March of 1864 he was wounded and captured by Union Troops in Tennessee. He was held as a Prisoner of War with his brother Robert until released on his Oath of Loyalty on 5 March 1865 spending about one year as a POW.
On January 27, 1880, James married Elizabeth Jane (Lizzie) Casey. She was born in Pendleton County in March 1850 and is listed as James' wife in the 1880 census. No records of her after this have been located.
