Eugenie was the daughter of Clinton Johnson and Sarah F. Powers (also found Powell). Per Sarah in 1910, the couple had seven children. I found names for only four—Bertha, Alfred, Eugenie and Mary.

The family appeared together on the 1880 Census, living in Rochester, Fulton Co., Indiana. Clinton Johnson, aged 32, was a farmer. Sarah, aged 26, was home with their three children—Alfred, aged 6, Eugenie (noted as a son named Eugene), aged 3, and Mary, aged 1.

On 26 Feb 1893, Eugenie married John F. Dawson in Limestone Co., Alabama. John was the son of William L. Dawson and Isabell M. Hershey. Per Eugenie on the 1900 and 1910 Census, the couple had three children, but her obituary mentions there were six total, three having died in their infancy. Here are the three named children—William T. (4 Feb 1894 Lewiston, Green Co., AL), Clinton ( Aug 1895 AL), and Ida Bell (26 Jun 1898 Cottonwood Falls, KS).

The 1900 Census placed the family in Argos, Walnut Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. John Dawson, aged 31, was farming. Eugenie, aged 25, reported that she had had three children, and that all had survived to that census. With their parents were William, aged 6, Clinton, aged 4, and Ida, aged 1.

The family was still living in the Argos area when the 1910 Census was enumerated. John Dawson, aged 42, was busy with the farm. Eugenie, aged 36, again reported having had three children, all three still living. Indeed, there with the couple were Willie, aged 16, Clinton, aged 14, and Ida (Ada on the record), aged 12.

In the decade following that census, John and Eugenie's nest emptied out. Son William married Alice Stonehill on 21 Feb 1917 in Argos. Son Clinton married Mildred A. Mangold circa 1926. And daughter Ida Bell married Floyd Bowell on 23 Dec 1915 in St. Joseph, Berrien Co., Michigan.

The 1920 and 1930 Census placed John and Eugenie in the same place, the 1930 Census noting their home as being on McGriff Rd. in Walnut Township. John (52, 62) was still actively farming. Eugenie (44, 54), was keeping house.

John and Eugenie spent forty three years together before death claimed Eugenie on 19 Aug 1936. John, widowed, aged 72, appeared without her on the 1940 Census, still living in Argos. He lived a full life, not passing into the light until 26 Apr 1961 at age 93.

As for the three children, son Clinton died in San Diego, California on 8 Oct 1978. Son William passed on 20 Sep 1989 and is buried here in Oak Hill. Daughter Ida Bell died ten days before Christmas on 15 Dec 1996 in Plymouth. Her Find-A-Grave memorial number is # 49544326 (am awaiting link).
