97 Squadron's Avro Manchester (#R5795) aircraft, with an aircrew of seven, took off from RAF Waddington for an air operation over Germany. R5795 was attacked by an enemy aircraft off the coast of Brest, France, causing the damaged aircraft to crash at sea and taking the lives of four members of the crew; three others who survived the crash were taken PoW and imprisoned in a German Stalag camp.

The airmen who perished in the attack and crash were-

RAF Sergeant George Gardiner FELL,

RCAF Sergeant Morton Ralph HEINISH and

RAFVR Pilot Officer Neville George STOKES.

Son of Noa Heinish of Preston Street in Halifax and son of the late Rachel (née Spiro) Heinish [father born in Romania; mother born in Poland; they married on 17 Oct 1917 in New Glasgow, Pictou County]; step-son of Sarah (née Saffron) Heinish; sibling of Ruth Anna (née Heinish) Star and of a baby brother who died in infancy.


Sergeant Morton Ralph Heinish is commemorated on Page 32 of Canada's Second World War Book of Remembrance.

He is also commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
