54 Halifax aircraft and 19 Wellington aircraft set out on a joint attack on Hamburg, Germany. Because of severe icing and thunder storms to and from the target, this attack was not considered a success.
428 Squadron’s Handley Page Halifax (#EB274) coded NA-H, with eight aircrew members, took flight from RAF Station Middleton St. George in County Durham on the late evening of 2 Aug 1943 on its operation over Hamburg. While flying off the coast of the Netherlands, EB274 was shot down by a German fighter aircraft (ME-110). All eight airmen perished and were lost at sea.
