Nolan was born to Lloyd and Laura Brown on June 21, 1932 in Marquette, Michigan. He volunteered for U.S. Army and served 2 ½ years as a member of the Military Police during the Korean War. He graduated with a degree in law from the University of Michigan in 1960 then moved, with his wife Helen and daughter Kimberly, to Denver, Colorado.
Nolan was in private practice from 1961 to 1968 when he received appointment to the office of Assistant District Attorney for the 1st Judicial District. He served as ADA until elected District Attorney in 1974 where he served for the next ten years. During his years in office, Nolan was known for being tough on crime as well as a crusader who developed and instituted many new programs including adult, juvenile, and non-support divisions, family violence and victim witness programs and PROMIS (the Prosecutors Information System).
Nolan was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed by those who survive him; his Wife of 60 years, Helen, daughter Kimberly, granddaughters Katy Holmquist, Brooke Brown and Sierra Brown. He was preceded in death by his son Kevin.
