THE TAYLORVILLE BREEZE, Taylorville, Illinois, 18 March 1940, Jerry Mitchell Slashes Throat Is Near Death — Funeral for Long–Time Resident of County Teusday., "Jerry Mitchell, about 70, was reported near death at the St. Vincent hospital at press time this afternoon as the result of self–inflicted slashes of his throat about 11:30 o'clock this morning. According to reports, Mitchell slashed himself at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Perry Hopson on West Vine street. He was rushed to the hospital immediately where two doctors worked for several hours in an effort to save his life. His jugular vein was severed and his throat was reported to have been slashed, "ear to ear". His condition is regarded as "extremely serious," by attendants who were unable to account for his resistance in the face of so serious a wound. No details of the incident could be learned this afternoon."

THE TAYLORVILLE BREEZE, Taylorville, Illinois, 19 March 1940, obituary, Jerry Mitchell Passes Away Monday Night — Final Rites for Retired Miner Will be Held Wednesday., "Jerry Mitchell, 76, a well known local retired miner, and a resident of this city for 40 years, died, at 11 o'clock Monday night in the St. Vincent hospital. While despondent over his failing health, Mr. Mitchell slashed his throat, Monday morning, in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Perry Hopson, 1016 West Vine street, with whom he resided. He had been in poor health for ten years, suffering from hardening of the arteries, asthma and a kidney ailment. Mr. Mitchell was born in Macoupin county, January 15, 1863, the son of Andrew and Rachel Mitchell. He and Miss Katharine Windsor were married June 1, 1889, at Hillsboro. The came to Taylorville in 1900. Mrs. Mitchell died in 1909. For many years Mr. Mitchell was employed at Peabody Mine 58, retiring about 30 years ago. For the last 25 years he had made his home with his two daughters, Mrs. Hopson and Mrs. George Lovell. He was a member of the First Baptist church. Surviving are his three daughters, Mrs. George Lovell, Decatur; Mrs. Perry Hopson, this city and Miss Ruth Mitchell, Chicago. He also leaves five grandsons, Bob, Joe, and George Hopson of this city; Eldon Lovell, Decatur and Mitchell Lovell, Tucson, Arix., and one sister, Mr. L. W. Hostetter of Shelbyville. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the Chesnut and Pearce funeral home. The Rev. Carroll Odell, pastor of the Christian church will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home until the hour of the funeral"

C. N. Odell. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery. Flower girls were Mary Adams, Josephine Meinecke, Edith Schalk, and Eileen Lovell. Pall bearers were Roy Martin, Edgar Adams, Windsor Meinecke, Frank Daugherty, George Bafford and Hennie Jones."

Jerry Mitchell, about 73, died at 11 p.m. last night in St. Vincent's hospital from wounds which were believed to have been self–inflicted. — Mr. Mitchell was taken to the hospital about 11:30 a.m. from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Perry Hopson. — Mr. Mitchell leaves three daughters, Mrs. George Lovell of Decatur, Miss Ruth Mitchell of Chicago, and Mrs. Perry Hopson of Taylorville, and one grandson, Joseph Hopson. — The body was taken to the Chestnut and Pearce funeral home. Arrangements are incomplete. An inquest was set for 1:30 p.m. today by Acting Coroner Pete Hill."

A coroner's jury investigating the death of Jerry Mitchell, 76–year–old Taylorville resident, returned a verdict of suicide as the result of despondencey over ill health, at the inquest held here Tuesday afternoon. Acting Coroner Pete Hill was in charge of the investigation. — Mitchell died late Monday night in St. Vincent's hospital after slashing his throat with a razor earlier in the day in the bathroom of the home here of his daughter, Mrs. Perry Hopson. — Funeral services for Mitchell were conducted at 3:30 p.m. today in the Chestnut and Pearce funeral home. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery."
