Roman Catholic Saint. Patron Saint of Palermo, "La Santuzza" Rosalia Sinibaldi was born to a noble Norman family descending from Charlemagne, the daughter of Sinibald, a feudal lord. Seeking religious life, she she took refuge in the convent of the Basilian nuns in Palermo but having been promised by her parents to a Count Baldwin, she could find no peace such that she ran away and lived for the rest of her life in a cave as a hermit, first on Mount Quisquina and then on Mount Pellegrino, where she died aged about thirty around the year 1166. She went forgotten up until 1624, during which time the city of Palermo, beset by plague, went on to declare her as its patron saint. It happened that a sick woman received an appearance from Rosalia. Appearing likewise to a hunter, to whom she indicated where her remains were to be found, she ordered him to transfer her bones to Palermo and have them carried in procession through the city. Climbing the mountain, the hunter found the bones in the cave as described. Taking them with him, after her remains were carried around the city three times, the plague ceased. While her bones remain venerated at the local Cathedral of Assumption of Virgin Mary, a sanctuary was constructed in the cave where her remains were found. The grotto in the mountain remains a highly devoted site to many Sicilians to this very day, with many walking barefoot from the city up to Mount Pellegrino on September 4, on the occasion of her liturgical feast day.
