Leigh Galloway Rogers passed away peacefully on September 14, 2015 in Dallas surrounded by loved ones. She was 93 years old. Leigh was born on January 11, 1922 in Sprott, Missouri, to Mertle Holmes Galloway and William Edgar Galloway. She lost her mother to tuberculosis when she was only six years old. Leigh graduated from Desloge (Missouri) High School in 1940, and she taught first through sixth grades in a one room schoolhouse following graduation. She married her high school sweetheart Leon Hollinger after the start of World War II while Leon was in the Army Air Corps flight program training as a B-17 pilot. After earning his wings, he was shot down and killed on his first bombing mission over Germany. Between VE and VJ Days, Leigh moved to New York and worked for an import-export business in the Empire State Building. While living in New York, she married C. Paul Rogers, Jr., and had one son. Leigh was a working mother before that was the norm and was employed for many years as an executive secretary and office manager for Community TV in Casper, Wyoming, and for an advertising firm in Odessa, Texas, where she met her wonderful friend Liz Roberson. In Wyoming she became very active in the National Secretaries Association and held offices in the regional organization. She also took up the piano and painting while in her 40s and became a very accomplished artist, exhibiting at art shows and selling many paintings to art lovers. She and her husband Wallace Horton retired to Albuquerque in the mid-1970's where Leigh lived close to her devoted older brother Carl and continued to paint and play the piano. She loved people and befriended individuals from all walks of life, including a Catholic priest (although Protestant herself), a Native American craftsman and jewelry maker, and well-known artists and pianists. Leigh loved to travel and enjoyed cruises, taking each of her three granddaughters on one of their choosing during their teenage years. Because of her difficult childhood, she was fiercely independent, but also very generous, loving, caring, and loyal. She possessed a fine sense of humor and was not afraid to laugh at herself. Leigh moved to Dallas in 2003 to be near family, and she delighted in creating one-of-a-kind needlepoint pictures of family homes for family and friends. Leigh is survived by her son C. Paul Rogers III and his longtime partner Julie Forrester, granddaughters Heather Rogers Heck (and husband Jay), Jillian Leigh Rogers, and Ruthie Rogers Massey (and husband Will), and four great grandchildren: Baer Heck, Bozlie Heck, Jonathan Van Auken, and Sam Massey. The family would like to express their gratitude to Leigh's wonderful caregivers Jane Muhia and Pamela Rafita, as well as long-time helper and jack-of-all-trades Lupe Callazo. They were truly gifts from God--they so often went beyond what was expected or required that words cannot convey our gratitude. A memorial service will be held at noon on Friday, September 18, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Northwest Highway chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association .
