"A native of Richmond and Prominent Citizen of Arvonia

(Special to The Times Dispatch)
ARVONIA, VA, June 19 - Mr. Alexander DuVal, a prominent citizen of this place, died at his home here yesterday afternoon at 6:30 o'clock, after an illness extending through several months. The end, while not altogether unexpected, owing to the patient's extreme illness during the past month, was a great shock to his many friends all through this section.

Mr. DuVal was a native of Richmond, having been born there on November 12, 1845. His father was Alexander DuVal, a prominent druggist of his day, and his mother the late Mrs. Eliza Duval, who, before her marriage, was Miss Eliza Moody Waller, who died at her home, NO. ??? East Franklin Street, last summer. On both sides of his family Mr. DuVal was connected with some of the most prominent and distinguished families in the state. His Father's family was of the old Huguenot stock that came to Virginia from France in the seventeenth century.

When the war between the States broke out, Alexander DuVal, then a boy of sixteen, joined the Old Second Richmond Howitzers, and was known among his comrades as one of the most daring and brilliant soldiers who ever wore the gray. He fought in battle after battle, and was always in the very thickest of the fight, whenever his desires could be carried out. In the battle of Deep Bottom, on the river below Richmond, a shell from a Federal gunboat exploded beneath him and shattered his right limb, which had to be amputated. To the end, he bore around with him an artificial limb, a grim reminder of his younger days.

Mr. Duval was a member of Lee Camp in Richmond, and was present at its meetings and functions whenever it was possible for him to go. His last audible words, spoken in delirium, were the sharp, strong words of soldering. He was fighting the old battles over again.

In 1875 Mr. DuVal married Miss Amanda Louise Hall, of Hanover county, who survives him. Since the surrender he had been connected with the service of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railfroad, being located at several places, but for the last eighteen years he had been living at ARvonia.

He leaves two sisters in Richmond - Mrs. Abbott and Mrs. Wormeley - and the following children: Mrs. Reuben Nicholas, of Arvonia, Mrs. Lightfoot Wormeley, of Washington; Misses Ella and Cassie DuVal and Messrs, Alexander and James DuVal, of West Virginia; Charles of Gladstone, Va, and Hunter of Waller, of Arvonia.

The deceased was a prominent member of the lodge of Odd Fellows, and his body will be laid to rest in the cemetery here to-morrow afternon, with the rites of that order. The funeral will b e held from the Presbyterian Church."
